Iowans could debate at length which is prettier: holiday lights or Memorial Day flags?
Most cemeteries in Greene County are decorated with flags honoring those who died during military service, and many families remember their loved ones with graveside visits and decorations.
In Jefferson, Elks Lodge 2306 puts up and takes down Avenues of Flags at both cemeteries. The Avenue of Flags at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery boasts 484 flags, and another 64 flags fly at the St Joseph Catholic Cemetery. The city’s park and recreation department maintains the cemeteries.
A brief service will be held at the St Joseph Cemetery Monday at 9:30 am. A full Memorial Day service is planned at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery at 11 am. Speaker will be Jim Andrew.
